Amber, Blue Fossil Specimen 4-5g (Group 2)

Description

Natural Blue Amber fossil specimen. Tested and dated to roughly 20 million years old. It’s name is derived from a very pale blue hue that can often be seen in the material in good light, but it mostly only shows in polished pieces. Colour intensity is variable across the material. Very cool!

GEOLOGICAL:

Amber is millions of years old fossilized tree resin from ancient forests. A tree will exude resin to fill and seal a wound on its bark. This resin solidifies and over the process of millions of years becomes fossilized. It has been prized by humans since Neolithic times.

Amber is graded and valued by inclusions, level of transparency, the rarity of colour and the region its from. It occurs in shades and hues of bright golden yellows, oranges, reds and reddish browns.

Blue amber is rare, and found mainly in the Dominican Republic and Indonesia. It’s formed from the resin of ancient extinct Hymenaea protera trees. The colour is actually a fluorescence stimulated by UV light. Hydrocarbons in the blue amber shift the sun’s ultraviolet light down in frequency, resulting in the ghostly blue glow.
