Apatite, Green Natural Rough Piece

Natural Blue Green Apatite rough piece. This Apatite is completely natural and has not been heat treated to produce the intense gemmy blue which we typically associate with the stone. Beautiful small gemmy translucent cobbed pieces. The colour is turquoise to clear, with minor inclusions and matrix present. From Madagascar. Good to A Grade.

GEOLOGICAL:

Strictly speaking, Apatite is the name of a group of minerals. It was named by A.G. Werner in the mid-1780’s from a derivation of the Greek verb a?as??, ‘to deceive’, since it has a history of incorrect identification by mineralogists. Madagascan Apatite occur in a beautiful range of blue, green, and yellow hues.

Madagascan Apatite is often UV reactive and called Fluorapatite. The Madagascan deposits that polished material is made from are not extensive nor available in large quantities. The natural material has a green to green blue colour, while the polished material is heat treated to produce the rich intensive gemmy colour.
