A lovely natural light blue Celestite crystalline specimen. Lots of sparkling perfectly formed small points. From Sakoany, Madagascar. Good to Very Good Grade. Size approx 12cm. Weight approx 385g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Celestite, also known as Celestine, got its name from the Latin word Caelestis, meaning “celestial”, which was inspired by the crystals’ delicate shades of sky blue. It was first discovered in Italy in the 18th century. Celestite is a mineral consisting of Strontium Sulfate, which is the principal source of the element Strontium widely used in fireworks.

Madagascar yields some amazing specimens of this mineral which has a range of blue to blue-grey colours. The acicular crystal habit is particularly rare, mostly found out of Congo. Celestite crystals are graded based on shape, clarity and colour, as well as levels of intactness.
