These are always a rare treat to get hold of! Lovely natural large cluster of cubic to octahedral formations of Fluorite. From Riemvasmaak, Northern Cape. Good to A Grade. Size approx 12cm. Weight approx 569g.

 

GEOLOGICAL:

Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, and belongs to the halide minerals. It can occur in natural octahedron and complex isometric forms, though it crystallizes in a cubic habit. Also known as Fluor Spar, it can occur in many different colours. Optically clear, transparent Fluorite is used in microscopes and telescopes, due to low dispersion properties.

Fluorite is often fluorescent under UV light. In fact, it was one of the first fluorescent minerals to be studied in 1852, and the word ‘fluorescent’ was named after Fluorite.
