Stunning octahedral green Fluorite crystals with a sugary texture against a beautiful white to translucent Quartz cluster. Lovely shape and colour specimen! Good to A Grade. From Riemvasmaak, Northern Cape, South Africa. Size approx 5.5cm. Weight approx 41g.

 

GEOLOGICAL:

Fluorite is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, and belongs to the halide minerals. It forms in natural octahedrons and complex isometric forms, though it crystallizes in a cubic habit. Also known as Fluor Spar, it can occur in many different colours.

Optically clear, transparent Fluorite is used in microscopes and telescopes, due to low dispersion properties. Fluorite is often fluorescent under UV light. In fact, it was one of the first fluorescent minerals to be studied in 1852, and the word ‘fluorescent’ was named after Fluorite.
