GEOLOGICAL

Fuchsite is a chromium rich variety of the mineral Muscovite, belonging to the Mica group. It was named in 1842 by Karl von Schafhäutl in honour of Johann von Fuchs. Fuchs was a professor of chemistry and mineralogy at University of Landshut, and curator of the mineral collection. It’s also known as Chrome Mica or Green Muscovite.

It is mostly found as light green, however the higher the chromium content, the richer the green colour that results. It generally occurs as flakes or plates that share Mica’s reflective qualities, and is very soft – only 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale. Fuchsite can fluoresce under long wave UV light.
