Blue Kyanite Crystals in Green Fuchsite Large Polished Standing Freeform 10.5cm

Large blue Kyanite bladed crystals with variable gemmy clarity. Some minor traces of Mica in association. Situated in a matrix of stunning sparkly green Fuchsite. Very rare batch from an inaccessible region of Africa! Awesome colour combo. Polished freeform with cut base for standing. Only a few of these were made!

From Zimbabwe. Good to Very Good Grade. Size approx 10.5cm. Weight approx 900g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Kyanite is an aluminosilicate mineral, found in aluminium-rich metamorphic pegmatites and sedimentary rock. It is most commonly blue but does occur in a few other colours more rarely, including clear, black, grey, yellow and green.

It was named in 1789 by Abraham Werner after the Greek “cyanos” or “kyanos”, meaning blue. Kyanite’s most distinctive trait is its strong anisotropic state, meaning it has two different hardness ranges, one along its length and one perpendicular.

 

Fuchsite, also known as Chrome Mica or Green Muscovite, is a chromium-rich variety of the mineral Muscovite, belonging to the Mica group. It was named in 1842 by Karl von Schafhäutl in honour of Johann von Fuchs, a professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the University of Landshut, and curator of the mineral collection.

It is mostly found as light green, however the higher the chromium content, the richer the green colour that results. It generally occurs as flakes or plates that share Mica’s reflective qualities and is very soft – only 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale. Fuchsite can fluoresce under long-wave UV light.
