GEOLOGICAL

Pectolite is a hydrous sodium calcium silicate that sometimes occurs with manganese. It’s a unique mineral best known for the interesting crystal habits it forms. It occurs mainly as fibrous and radiating veins, balls and tufts, globular masses and fan-like radiating crystals. Globular Pectolite sometimes lines basalt cavities and geodes. It gets its name from Franz von Kobell in 1828, from the Greek ?????? (English: pektos) for “held tightly together”.

Larimar is the rare blue variety of Pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, around the city of Barahona. It is highly prized (and priced) around the world for its beauty and exclusivity. The colour is due to the presence of Copper. Its found in cavities and veins of altered basalt.
