Cool laser (long, thin) tabby (flat) Quartz, mostly clear with a Smoky end section. Baby double terminated tabby at a cross to main point. With a scattering of Aegirine / Arfvedsonite crystals. From Zomba, Malawi. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 8cm. Weight approx 21g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Quartz is a hexagonal crystalline mineral composed of Silica. It is one of the most abundant minerals on earth. Quartz vibrates at a very specific frequency. This, combined with its general hardness and durability, heat resistance and electrical properties, has made it one of the most useful crystals in the modern world. Quartz crystals can be found in numerous colours and in beautiful shapes, sizes and hues

 

Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz. It contains Aluminium exposed to natural radiation in the earth (from radioactive rock around it). As the crystal is irradiated, the colour centres around the Aluminium in the Quartz are activated. The material develops a smoky colour, ranging from a light smoky hue to almost opaque black (known as ‘Morion’ Smoky), and sometimes with orange to brown hues. 

 

Aegirine is a dark green to black inosilicate mineral and part of the Pyroxene group. It can be found as long slender prismatic crystals, in radiating acicular sprays, fibrous, and in radial concretions. Norwegian mineralogist Hans Esmark named Aegirine in 1835 after Ægir, the Norse god of the sea.
