Blue Corundum Sapphire rough piece.

Natural rough piece of blue Corundum (best known as the gem Sapphire). With some microcrystalline mica in association. The blue is pale to a cream colour, and is variable across the material. Euhedral, subhedral and irregular formation fragments.

Low to Medium Grade. Size approx 2-4cm.

 

GEOLOGICAL INFO

Corundum is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide. It typically contains traces of iron, titanium, vanadium, chromium or magnesium. It is a rock-forming mineral. Different trace elements can create different shades, although blue is the most common.

Sapphire is the name for gem quality blue Corundum. The name is derived from the Latin “saphirus” and the Greek “sapheiros”, both of which mean blue. Sapphire gets its colour from the inclusion of trace amounts of Titanium.
