Polished Leopard Serpentine crystal tower with beautiful colour and patterns. Stunning! From Zimbabwe. Very Good to A Grade. Size approx 8cm. Weight approx 246g.

 

GEOLOGICAL:

Serpentine is not the name of a single mineral but a group of minerals that share similar physical properties and form by similar processes. In general, they occur in varying combinations of Magnesium; Iron; Nickel; Aluminium; and either Zinc or Manganese; with Silicon, Aluminum or Iron.

Serpentine is usually opaque, sometimes translucent, in massive formation and has a waxy feel. It occurs in various shades of green, but can be yellow, black, white, and other colours.

Leopard Serpentine gets its beautiful, distinct dark markings from inclusions of ferromagnesian Olivine. It is known geologically as Dunite, and forms part of a Serpentine complex some 2.6 billion years old. The dense material with extremely fine grains and uniform structure make it ideal for carving. The Shona people traditionally use it for this purpose.
