Gorgeous dark Morion Smoky Quartz in tabby formation, a twinned crystal sharing a single point. One large point with a beautiful smaller point next to it and some less complete clustered crystals below that. In association with Aegirine and Orthoclase. From Zomba, Malawi. Size approx 9cm. Weight approx 188g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz. It contains Aluminium exposed to natural radiation in the earth (from radioactive rock around it). As the crystal is irradiated, the colour centres around the Aluminium in the Quartz are activated. The material develops a smoky colour, ranging from a light smoky hue to almost opaque black (known as ‘Morion’ Smoky), and sometimes with orange to brown hues.
