Copal is the resin, or aromatic healing sap, that exudes from various trees, most commonly the Protium Copal (Burseraceae) tree. It has been used ceremonially and as incense by cultures stretching back to pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The ancient Aztecs called it the “blood of trees’.

If left undisturbed for thousands of years, the Copal resin eventually becomes Copal amber, which after a few million years, becomes Amber.

This loose resin can be burned on a charcoal block or similar to release aromatic smoke, like burning an incense stick. Individual pieces of resin are called ‘tears’.
